Staff build their own software

The valuation group wanted its staff to build software with AI themselves, without sprawl. It started with AI Dev Days: workshops in which an employee describes in plain language what an app should do and the AI writes the software. Now an in-house team of eight developers builds the software itself, with us as project lead.

From AI Dev Days to an in-house team

An in-house team of eight developers now builds the group’s software. It started with AI Dev Days: workshops in which staff learned to build an app by describing in plain language what it should do.

  1. AI Dev Days

Staff without a technical background built their own app in workshops. They described what the app should do, and the AI wrote the software.

  2. Guidance while building

We then guided the builders on every app: reviewing, advising and putting one way of working in place together.

  3. An in-house team of eight developers

The team now builds the group’s apps itself, with us as project lead.

One development kit under every app

To prevent sprawl we built a development kit: the parts every app needs, built properly once and shared. A new app never starts from scratch, and every app is secured in the same way.

  • Central sign-in

One way of signing in for every app, arranged centrally instead of per app.

  • Security and checks

Automatic checks run on every change, and an app only goes into use after a fixed checklist.

  • A vault for keys

Passwords and access keys sit in one secure place. Nobody gets to see them, so when someone leaves, every app keeps working.

  • Building blocks in the house style

Screens, buttons and forms in the house style, so all apps form one whole.

  • A knowledge base of expertise

Valuation expertise sits in one place and is approved by the valuers themselves. Every app works from the same knowledge.

  • A fixed starting point

Every new app starts from the same base, with a practice version and a live version.

What the team built itself

Three examples of apps the in-house team built itself, all on the development kit.

  • Calculation models as a web app

Calculation models, such as the one for the rebuild value of a building, lived in Excel and now run as a web app. The outcome matches the original down to the cent, and everyone works in the same version.

  • On-site inspection tool

A tablet app in which the valuer records the inspection during the visit on site.

  • Portal from request to invoice

Clients request a valuation through the portal, and the valuers handle it in the same environment, all the way to the invoice.

Are your staff already building with AI, or do you want them to learn?

In a 10-minute intro call we look at whether a talk, a workshop or an AI Dev Day is the best first step.

How we keep the risk small

  • First a talk or an AI Dev Day, so you see what your team makes in one workshop.
  • Then one fixed way of working, so every app is set up safely and the same way.
  • Your team builds. We stay project lead for as long as needed.
